The APEC-2012 car rally started from Saint Petersburg on 30 June and will finish in Vladivostok. Participants are to visit more than 20 major Russian cities.

Ten cars carrying businessmen, politicians, athletes and journalists from all the APEC member countries will cross Russia, from west to east.

En route they will be welcomed by more than twenty Russian cities, including Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk and Khabarovsk which will be the venue of the APEC tourism ministers’ meeting.

The final point of the rally is Vladivostok, more precisely Russky Island, where the cars will drive across the recently inaugurated bridge.

All along the route of the APEC-2012 rally traditional Russian tea parties will be held.

This is thought to be an important element of the rally. One of the mottoes is “Tea against drugs.” The organisers’ message is that tea is the favourite Russian drink. Tea is an invariable part of all festive occasions and family celebrations in Russia.

The tourist route called “The Great Tea Way” has been developed by travel agencies from Russia, China and Mongolia.

Initially, it was one of the longest land trade routes by which caravans carried tea from China to Europe via Mongolia and Russia.
