The construction of four Russian military bases on the islands of the Arctic Ocean has been completed, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

"The construction of four military bases has been completed on the islands. The construction of an aerodrome and a military city has begun on Alexandra Land. Military facilities are being built on the islands Kotelny, Wrangel, Sredny, Novaya Zemlya, Cape Schmidt and in the village of Alakurtti," Shoigu told a Defense Ministry collegium on Dec. 11.

Shoigu said that "measures for environmental cleaning of the Arctic, where over 65,000 tonnes of scrap metal has accumulated, have been taken."

Shoigu said all these things are being done to implement a program for comprehensive development of the Arctic territories from the Arkhangelsk region to the Far East and the Arctic Ocean islands.
