In December 2002 Hans Göran Persson, Prime Minister of Sweden, filed for divorce from his wife Annika, and the divorce proceedings were completed in April 2003. The reason for their parting was not stated. The couple had been married for a little less than eight years. They did not have any children together.

In October 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France, officially dissolved his marriage to his wife Cécilia. The couple parted “by mutual consent” after 11 years together. Sarkozy had stopped appearing in public with his wife in May 2005, when he assumed the post of France’s Minister of the Interior.

In May 2009 the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s wife Veronica announced her decision to divorce her husband. The reason was acts of unfaithfulness on his part – reports had appeared in the media about the prime minister’s liaison with the 18-year-old model Naomi Letizia. The divorce was finalised in 2012.

In March 2011 the divorce of Alvaro Colom, President of Guatemala, and his wife Sandra Torres, was announced. Sandra Torres wanted to run for president, but the Guatemalan Constitution forbids members of the current head of state’s family or close relatives from standing for this post. The divorce was officially finalised, but the court still did not allow her to run for office.

In May 2011 Alan García, President of Peru, officially confirmed that he had separated from his wife Pilar Nores two years before. The head of state had earlier admitted that in addition to the four children he had had with his wife, he had fathered another child outside the marriage.

In March 2012 another Swedish prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, separated from his wife Filippa after 20 years together. The couple were married in 1992 and have three children.

Putin and his wife, Lyudmila, said on state television on Thursday that they had separated and their marriage was over after 30 years.
