Last year the Russian edition of National Geographic Traveler included
the Chuysky Trakt on a list of
the top-10 most wonderful road trips in the world (National Geographic Traveler magazine, №42, April-May, 2014). They consider it to be on par with the Dalton Highway in the U.S. and National Route 40 in Argentina, noting that, “crossing the Chuysky Trakt is like crossing the whole of Russia.”

The Chuysky Trakt, which rambles on for about 1,000 kilometers, starts in Novosibirsk (2,812 kilometers from Moscow) and extends across the Altai Territory and the Altai Republic down to Russia’s border with Mongolia.

RBTH asked Russian journalist Diana Serebrennikova to share her impressions of traveling along the road and taking some amazing photos.

“We drove along the Chuysky Trakt, 1500 kilometers in three days. During our short trip, we enjoyed views of mountains of different shapes, endless fields and forests; we were amazed by the number of domestic camels and sheep; we rode on horses in the Sarlyk Mountains, walked through the Tavdinskie Caves and drank plenty of Altai tea.”

"You don’t have to turn off the Chuysky Trakt to see the wonderful Siberian nature."
Diana Serebrennikova
"The Chuysky Trakt is an ancient road (there is a museum dedicated to it in the city of Bijsk) connecting Russia and China, and at the same time a modern highway, 630 km in length."

"We had no problems with accommodation during the trip. We found a nice family that used to live in Novosibirsk before they decided to settle in a village and take up farming. They have a nice guesthouse, where we spent a night."

"Astonishing views appear through the windscreen: snowy mountain peaks, vast rivers, curved slopes."
Diana Serebrennikova
"There are also cozy motels on the banks of the Katuni river. Guides are available for day-trips on horseback to the surrounding lakes. It is simpler to reach them by car, but horse-riding is a wonderful experience and worth the time and the effort."
Diana Serebrennikova
"How did I get there? I traveled from Krasnoyark to Novosibirsk by train, then by car. On our way along the Chuysky Trakt we stopped at the Tavdinskie Caves, the Seminskyi Pass, Karakolskaya Valley, and the confluence of the Chui and Katuni rivers."
