The Russian Defense Ministry will soon deploy specialists from the international mine action center and robotic complexes to Syria's Palmyra on a demining mission, Russian Armed Forces General Staff Chief - First Deputy Defense Minister, Gen. of the Army Valery Gerasimov has said.
"On the orders from the Russian president, the Engineering Forces, including units of the international mine action center, will be clearing Palmyra of mines," he said.
"Later this week, within the next few days, special purpose hardware, demining robots will be deployed there," Gerasimov said.
The liberation of Palmyra is of strategic significance in the fight against terrorism in Syria, he said.
