Russian sergeant dies of injuries received in Aleppo

A Russian serviceman who had been injured in Syria died in Moscow, the Russian Defense Ministry's press service and information department told Interfax on June 16.

"On June 7 Junior Sergeant Mikhail Shirokopoyas, a contract soldier, died in the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital of injuries he received during fire opened on the convoy of the Russian center for reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria. He was gravely injured in the province of Aleppo in early May of 2016," the ministry said.

Command posthumously awarded Junior Sergeant Shirokopoyas the Order of Courage, the ministry said.

Military doctors swiftly provided him with medical attention and he was airlifted to the military hospital in Moscow, the ministry said.

"The best doctors of the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital made all efforts to save his life, but the injury was fatal. The serviceman was buried with honors in his homeland in the Amursk region," the ministry said.
