U.S. citizen Julio Prieto will be tried in the Novosibirsk region, in West Siberia, for illegally crossing Russia’s state border, local prosecutors announced on Oct. 6.
The 29-year-old U.S. national is currently in custody in the town of Karasuk, east of Novosibirsk, the press service said. The district deputy prosecutor has confirmed that an indictment against Prieto has been made.
Investigators say on Sept. 14 Prieto arrived from Kazakhstan at the Pavlovka checkpoint of the Federal Security Service (FSB) border control service located in Karasuk, in the Novosibirsk region.
The American citizen was prohibited from crossing Russia’s border since he did not have a visa. He later attempted to cross the state border by skirting the checkpoint and was detained by a border patrol unit.
The suspect pleaded guilty to the charges. The Karasuksky district court will conduct a hearing on the case.
