Vitaly Mutko has said he, as Russia's sports minister, shares responsibility for the latest events surrounding the use of mildronate by a number of leading Russian athletes.

"I, as head of this sector, bear my own responsibility for Pavel Kulizhnikov, Yekaterina Bobrova. I share this collective responsibility and should be beside them. It is necessary to understand what went wrong. It is necessary to create a system that will protect our top athletes from such things," Mutko said at a session of the Russian Sports Ministry's public council.

There is a need to develop domestic sports medicine in order not to use foreign substances in sports pharmacology, he stressed.

"When we do not create our own [substances], we get caught taking Latvian and Chinese substances. There should be our own scientific research activity in the sport of high achievements," Mutko said.
