1. В гостя́х хорошо́, а дома лу́чше 

Translation: It is good to be visiting, but it is better at home.

English proverb: East or West, home is best.

- Мы так ра́ды, что наконе́ц прие́хали домо́й!

- We are so happy to be back home!

- Да, правильно говоря́т: "В гостя́х хорошо́, а дома лу́чше".

- Yes, it is true what they say: “East or West, home is best”.

2. Поспеши́шь - люде́й насмеши́шь

Translation: If you hurry, you will make people laugh.

English proverb: Haste makes waste.

[1] - Представля́ешь, я так спешил на рабо́ту, что по доро́ге упа́л в лу́жу!

- Imagine, I was rushing to work so much that I fell down in a puddle.

- Я же всегда́ говорю́: "Поспеши́шь - люде́й насмеши́шь".

- I always say : “Haste makes waste”.

3. Москва́ не сра́зу стро́илась

Translation: Moscow was not built all of a sudden.

English proverb: Rome was not built in a day.

- У него́ отли́чная рабо́та, но зарпла́та пока́ ни́зкая.

- He has a nice job, but the salary is not so high yet.

- Ничего́, э́то придёт со вре́менем:  "Москва́ не сра́зу стро́илась".

- No worries, it will come with the time: “Rome was not built in a day”.

4. Вре́мя - де́ньги

Translation: Time is money.

        English proverb: Time is money.

- Свобо́дного времени у Ани нет совсе́м. 

- Anna has no free time at all.

- О́чень жаль, как все зна́ют: "Вре́мя - де́ньги".

- It is such a pity; as everybody knows: “Time is money”.

5. Наси́льно мил не бу́дешь

Translation: You cannot force people to like you.

English proverb: You can take a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.

- Он тако́й замеча́тельный челове́к, а ей не нра́вится, невероя́тно! 

- He is such a wonderful person, and she does not like him, it is just incredible!

- Сама́ зна́ешь: "Наси́льно мил не бу́дешь".

- You know it yourself : “You can take a horse to water but you cannot make him drink”. 

6. Оди́н в поле не во́ин 

Translation: A single man in the field is not a warrior.

English proverb: One man no man.

- Са́ша всë хо́чет сам сде́лать: и в командиро́вку пое́хать, и би́знес-план предста́вить, э́то невозмо́жно!

- Sasha wants to do everything himself: go on a business trip and present a business-plan, but it is impossible!

- Нет, оди́н в поле не во́ин, пусть они́ разде́лят обя́занности.

- One man no man, everybody has to divide their responsibilities.

7. Лежа́чего не бьют

Translation: A man must not be struck when he is down.

English proverb: Don’t strike a man when he is down.

- Он заболе́л, а нача́льник его́ уво́лил. 

- He fell ill, and his boss fired him.

- Вообще́-то лежа́чего не бьют!

- Everybody knows: “Don’t strike a man when he is down”.

8. Не та́к страшен чëрт, как его́ малю́ют

Translation: The devil is not so frightful as he is painted.

English proverb: The devil is not so black as he is painted.

- Я всю рабо́ту уже зако́нчил, не было так тру́дно!

- I have already finished the work, it was not so difficult!

- Вот ви́дишь: "Не та́к страшен черт, как его́ малю́ют".

- You see, "The devil is not so black as he is painted".

9. Куй желе́зо, пока́ горячо́

Translation: Strike the iron while it is hot.

                                                  English proverb: Strike while the iron is hot.

- Нача́льник сего́дня в хоро́шем настрое́нии! 

- The boss is in a good mood today!

- Куй желе́зо пока́ горячо́, попроси́ у него́, что́бы он тебя́ повы́сил!

- Strike while the iron is not, ask him to promote you!

10. Ти́ше е́дешь - да́льше бу́дешь

Translation: The slower you ride, the farther you will go.

English proverb: More haste, less speed.

- Я пишу́ диссерта́цию о́чень ме́дленно.

- I’m writing my thesis really slowly!

- Ничего́, ничего́: "Ти́ше е́дешь - да́льше бу́дешь".

- Don’t be worried too much: “More haste, less speed”.
