Putin dismisses Gen. Makarov as General Staff chief

Putin has appointed new defense minister

President Vladimir Putin has relieved Army General Nikolai Makarov of his duties as chief of the General Staff and first deputy defense minister, and dismissed him from military service, the Kremlin press service reported on Friday.

Putin also dismissed Alexander Sukhorukov from the post of first deputy defense minister.
