Gergiev, London Symphony Orchestra to play Tchaikovsky in Trafalgar Square

A special free concert on May 22 will consist of works composed by legendary Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and will feature the participation of young musicians from disadvantaged districts of East London.

London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and renowned Russian conductor Valery Gergiev are to perform a special concert in London's Trafalgar Square on May 22, 6:30pm.

This free event will consist of works composed by legendary Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The program includes the 1812 Overture (written to honor Russia's victory in the war against Napoleon), Symphony No 4 and a suite from his famous ballet Swan Lake.

Participants of LSO’s social program – 42 young musicians from the disadvantaged districts of East London, as well as 23 students of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, will join the performance of the suite side-by-side with orchestra members.

Concerts like this have been performed with a support of BMW Group for five years already in what the LSO’s managing director Kathryn McDowell described as “a real highlight in the Orchestra’s calendar, for the players, the large audience of Londoners and visitors, and also for the young musicians from our On Track program in East London.”

Last year the program consisted of works by Dmitry Shostakovich.
