Russia’s Defense Ministry is planning to build and reconstruct ten airfields in the Arctic to strengthen Russian armed forces at northern latitudes, Izvestiya newspaper reported.
"Russia’s Federal Agency for Special Construction (Spetsstroy) is building military infrastructural facilities on six islands in the Arctic," the newspaper quoted a Defense Ministry spokesman as saying.
According to the spokesman, more than 100,000 tons of various supplies are planned to be delivered to over 150 remote lighthouses, islands, units and garrisons in 2016.
In accordance with the northern delivery program, hard-to-reach areas will be the first to receive supplies. This work is planned to be done during a period with good weather conditions, the spokesman said.
Servicemen in the Arctic will also receive more than 190,000 tons of construction and inert materials, in particular, airfield slabs, cement, metals, pipes and reinforcement rods, as well as equipment, the spokesman added.
The Defense Ministry will continue setting up units in the Arctic through 2020.
Infrastructural facilities are currently under construction in the Extreme North, Siberia and the Far East to accommodate more than 20,000 servicemen and their families, as well as civilian personnel accomplishing various tasks at Defense Ministry facilities.
