In recent years, Moscow Museum of Modern Art has been fully engaged in the contemporary art. Thereby, the part of collections showing previous stages of artistic development seems to be concealed in the Museum’s storerooms forever. Harvest, Kazimir Malevich, 1912-1913 // What will they exhibit this time? First of all, it is the classical Russian Avant-garde art of the first quarter of the 20th century, without which it is impossible to understand artistic processes of the whole century.

Visitors can also take an interest in the section of virtuoso sanguine pictures by Vasily Shukhaev, who belongs to the neoclassical movement, which is opposite to the avant-garde art but paradoxically enriches it.

Untitled, Vladimir Izdebsky, 1882-1965 // In a relatively short period of time, the Museum’s team could collect first-class works by immigrant artists, i.e. Boris Anisfeld, Serge Charchoune, Andrei Lanskoy, Vladimir Baranov-Rossine, Pyotr Dmitrienko, Alexandra Exter, Vladimir Izdebsky.

An important section of the exhibition contains artworks by non-conformist artists of the 1960-1970s.

The so-called «Second Russian Avant-garde» has challenged the official art in the bold atmosphere of the forbidden exhibitions, for example, the celebrated open-air Bulldozer exhibition, arranged in 1974 in the Belyaevo district.

Masters of the so-called «left MOSKh» are close to the non-official art. They are Illarion Golitsyn, Natalia Egorshina, Nikolai Andronov, Andrei Vasnetsov.

Portrait of the Artist’s Wife, Kazimir Malevich, 1933 // The history of the 20th and 21st century art ends with works by actual artists. Among authors there are post-conceptualists and young conceptualists, such as Aidan Salakhova, Pavel Pepperstein, Vitaly Pushnitsky, Alexei Belyaev-Gintovt, Oleg Tistol, Igor Kopystyansky, Konstantin Latyshev, Alexei Kallima, Dmitri Tsvetkov and others.

Next to painters of the Moscow circle, there are artists of the Leningrad Underground of the 1980s, the legendary New Artists group headed by Timur Novikov, the leader of the group. Together with his works, there are works by Oleg Kotelnikov, Vadim Ovchinnikov, Inal Savchenkov and Ivan Sotnikov.
