Baseball, a Russian rarity

The Shigeyoshi Matsumae baseball stadium, built in 1989 on the grounds of Moscow State University (MSU), is one of only a handful in Moscow and the whole of Russia.

In the late 1980s the rector of Japan’s Tokai University, Shigeyoshi Matsumae, gifted MSU a donation as a sign of more than twenty years of friendly ties between the two institutes. Since then, the stadium has regularly hosted competitions. Today it is a huge honor for young Russian players to take the field there.

The lack of sponsorship means the players buy all necessary kit and equipment themselves, and do what they can to get noticed by foreign clubs.
