Approx. 10,000 Ukrainians apply for asylum in Russia

Around 10,000 Ukrainian citizens have applied to Russian migration authorities for asylum in Russia, Federal Migration Service spokesperson Marina Kapustina has said.

Around 10,000 Ukrainian citizens have applied to Russian migration authorities for asylum in Russia, Federal Migration Service spokesperson Marina Kapustina has said.

"Some 9,600 citizens of Ukraine have submitted applications seeking refugee status or temporary asylum [in Russia]," she said.

Up to 500,000 Ukrainian citizens are currently staying in Russian regions along the border with Ukraine, she added.

According to Russia's migration authorities, 271 temporary refugee shelters have been set up in Russia to accommodate people who have fled the fighting in southeastern Ukraine.

More than 95,000 Ukrainian citizens have applied to the Federal Migration Service concerning different aspects of their legal status.
