"Fighting is underway within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from the airport, encompassing the Donetsk-Horlivka highway and the nearby territories," the militia's headquarters told Interfax.
Plumes of black smoke can be seen above the airport and a residential area in the vicinity of the airport. The sounds of shelling and gunfire can be heard, an Interfax correspondent reported.
According to preliminary reports, several civilians were wounded when a shell blew up at a public transport stop.
The defense ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic informed Interfax about intensified fighting near the Donetsk airport earlier on Sunday.
"One may get the impression that those who are defending themselves are using all kinds of weapons available to them. We are receiving reports about ruined residential buildings," the defense ministry said.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, Volodymyr Polevoy, said earlier on Sunday that shelling had been reported in some districts in southeastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours, including near the Donetsk airport.
"The enemy attacks have been rebuffed without losses among Ukrainian servicemen," Polevoy said.
