Each of the convicts was sentenced to six months in a standard security prison.
The foreigners were detained in the Lakhdenpokhya district by officers of the regional FSB (Russian Federal Security Service) border guard department back in June 2015. All of them arrived in Karelia from Russia's Ivanovo region, where they had by then been living for a few years.
"The detainees admitted that the only purpose of their travel to Karelia was to violate the state border. They had planned to apply for asylum when in Finland," the border guards said in a report.
