Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has offered a critique of the plans to build the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

"I feel extremely negative about this project," Prodi said in his lecture in Moscow.

In the opinion of the former prime minister, this project "will divide Europe into the North and the South."

"Indeed, a situation in which the entire volume of Russian gas will reach Europe exclusively through German territory and some European countries will have to look for alternatives to Russian gas cannot be assessed positively," the former Italian prime minister said.

"I am confident that the division of Europe does not meet Russia's interests," Prodi said.
