Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, has suggested that the UN Security Council (UNSC) should adopt a statement concerning the situation on the Korean peninsula, the Rossiya 24 (VGTRK) television station reported on May, 3.
The document contains a call for all countries concerned to reduce their military activity in the region. The proposal is currently being studied by the U.S. delegation
"It is highly important to ask the sides concerned to reduce their military activity in the region," Churkin was quoted as saying by the TV channel.
Rossiya 24 also recalls that in the past few weeks, Washington has been holding large-scale military exercises together with South Korea. For its part, North Korea responded to this by conducting two ballistic missile launches. According to Seoul, both launches failed.
