Published documents from the 'Panama Papers' are stolen, and one should not link them to Russia's policy towards de-offshorization of business, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
"I would not try to link the de-offshorization policy to the 'Panama Papers'. These are completely different phenomena," he told the press on May 10.
Peskov was asked whether the Russian de-offshorization policy could be proclaimed successful against the backdrop of numerous Russians mentioned in the published 'Panama Papers'.
"The 'Panama Papers' are stolen documents. We should call a spade a spade," he said.
Despite the policy towards de-offshorization of the Russian economy, no one has prohibited offshore businesses in Russia as such, and there is nothing illegal about them, the presidential press secretary said.
The evasion of taxes and attempts to evade paying taxes in Russia are illegal, Peskov added.
