The Russian military operation in Syria will not be protracted, Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Yevgeny Lukyanov said, answering a question from Interfax.
"Some predicted it would be another Afghanistan or something else. That will never happen. This is a targeted, limited military plan," he told reporters in Grozny on May 24.
"You have seen that we have withdrawn a substantial portion of our units [from Syria]. This is also a sign of change. Given that the military assess the situation on the front," Lukyanov said.
"We are not Syrians. We are not going to fight for Syria there. They have to resolve their issues themselves. We are helping, but you can see the limited format," the Russian Security Council deputy secretary said.
