The second unit of India’s Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, which is being built with Russian assistance, is expected to go on stream on August 27, the project’s general contractor ASE said in a press release on August 16.
India’s Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has issued permission to raise the output of Kudankulam’s second unit, ASE said in the press note.
“The operation to take the reactor to the minimum controlled capacity level is to begin tonight,” ASE’s vice-president for South Asia projects, Andrey Lebedev said on August 16. “After that the reactor will be raised to 30 percent of the nominal capacity. The customer expects the second unit of Kudankulam to go on stream August 27-28.”
The AERB believes that the unit is safe for commercial operation.
The Kudankulam NPP, being built with Russian assistance, is a major joint Russian-Indian energy industry project in southern India. It has already brought electricity to the states of Tamil nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra-Pradesh and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
