Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the situation in Aleppo and work at the UN Security Council on the North Korean problem in a telephone conversation on Oct. 1, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"They discussed possible joint action to bring to normal the situation in Aleppo, as well as the work at the UN Security Council on the North Korean problem and certain aspects of bilateral relations," the ministry said.
Lavrov and Kerry continued discussion of the situation in Syria, including opportunities for normalization of the situation in Aleppo, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"Heads of the foreign services continued discussion of the situation in Syria, including opportunities for normalization of the situation in Aleppo, where illegal armed groups, despite of the Russian-American agreements on cessation of fire by the conflicting sides, continue fighting. Many groups of the "moderate" Syrian opposition refuse to dissociate themselves from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, which are not subject to the cease-fire," the statement said.
Sergey Lavrov also noted that the attempts of opposition supervised by the West to treat Jabhat al-Nusra with indulgence is unacceptable as well as blocking negotiations on a political settlement of the crisis, the report said.
The conversation was initiated by the United States. Since the beginning of the year, Lavrov and Kerry have held dozens of telephone conversations and personal meetings.
