Usmanov was the only candidate at the election, which took place at the Federation’s congress in Moscow.
Usmanov was elected the Federation’s President by the consent from all delegates. The regulations say that if there is only one candidate for the position, voting is not organized, the source told TASS.
The Russian businessman has been head of the International Fencing Federation since 2008.
Usmanov is the biggest beneficiary (48%) of the USM Holdings, which controls 100% of Metalloinvest — one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of iron ore products and hot briquetted iron (HBI) and one of the largest steel makers in Russia, owning the Lebedinsky and Mikhailovsky open-pit mines, Urals Steel and Oskol Electrometallurgical plant. Usmanov is a member of the Independent public anti-doping commission, led by Vitaly Smirnov. Besides, Usmanov owns a share in the UK’s Arsenal football club.
