Town of Pskov: Home to medieval monasteries and modern airbases

Pskov is a town in North-West Russia located 732 km from Moscow
By Pavel Inzhelevsky, Anna Levicheva

Pskov is one of Russia’s most ancient settlements; the town is mentioned by some historical sources as early as 903.

The name of the city, originally spelled "Pleskov", may be loosely translated as "[the town] of purling waters", as it’s situated at a point where the small Pskov River enters the Velikaya River. The old town is located on a rather high hill of limestone: it is here that the Pskov’s fortress, called Krom or Kremlin, was erected. Nowadays Pskov is a site of cultural tourism, as well as an important educational and military center.
