100 km to the west of Moscow lies the town of Mozhaysk. The town was first mentioned in chronicles in 1231. The name ‘Mozhaysk’ has Baltic roots and means “small”. This is where the Moscow River begins.
The town can be reached by taking a commuter train from Belorussky Train Station or by car only either the Minskoe or Mozhayskoe Highways.

Before the 17th century, the Ferapontov Monastery was enclosed by wooden walls. However, in the 18th century, the decision was made to build a stone wall with towers around the monastery. These structures remain to this day.
