Good news for lovers of wooden architecture! While you used to have to spend days roaming from one village to another to see quaint peasant houses, gorgeous churches, bucolic barns and majestic windmills, you can now take in all kinds of rustic masterpieces in just one place. Shchelokovsky Khutor, an open-air ethnographic museum spread out over 36 hectares, is just a short ride from the center of Nizhny Novgorod (260 miles east of Moscow).
The museum opened in 1973. Here you can find rare examples of Russian wooden architecture from the 17th-20th centuries. You can also check out the classic interiors of a peasant house – currently one of the wooden huts is open to visitors. Moreover the museum often hosts folk festivals and historical reconstruction events.
Shchelokovsky Khutor is located within the city limits and can easily be reached by public transportation.
