Wendy Paton
Wendy Paton was in the throes of a successful, ground-breaking career, training and riding race horses in New York, when she became interested in photography in 1981.

Wendy went on to study photography at the International Center of Photography in New York City, learned the intricacies of night-time photography from Michael Kenna, and darkroom printing techniques from her mentor and collaborator, master printer Chuck Kelton.

Her nocturnal portraits are intimate and familiar, compelling and mysterious. Paton, who works exclusively with film cameras, shot the body of work in her Visages de Nuit exhibition over a six-year span that began in 2006.
Wendy Paton
Intrigued by the mysterious and ever-changing nature of human personalities and their individual choices of expression, she chooses to photograph at night, when she believes people feel the freedom to be as they wish, to take on a personality that they imagine, or to simply be themselves, stripping away any facades.

As with Cartier-Bresson, her images are taken in that “decisive moment.” In this moment, at that specific instant in time, only a photographer instinctually knows “this is the time, take the photograph.”
Wendy Paton
Visages de Nuit, Paton's series of candid, nocturnal, black-and-white images, was first exhibited in 2009 at the Clues to Identity exhibition.
