Breaking Bad: Rebuilding Magadan's Troubled Fame

The city of Magadan was founded in 1929 as a workers' settlement for the development of mineral resources (primarily gold) in Kolyma. In 1939, Magadan became a city. Magadan was constructed — and the surrounding resources mined — primarily by prisoners. Magadan was the center of the North-East Corrective Labor Camp until 1951.

Magadan lies on the same latitude as St. Petersburg, but the climate is more severe. Trees grow in the river valleys. If one ascends the surrounding hills, the Taiga is soon replaced by forest-tundra, followed by actual tundra.

The Ola River originates on the slopes of the Ola Plateau, runs through the surrounding lowlands, and empties into Taui Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk. The river is a spawning ground for hunchback salmon, chum salmon, grayling, and other kinds of fish.

Every day, inflatable boats carrying fishermen and instructors tour the fishing routes and return to base camp at the appointed time.

During the period of mass repressions, Nagaev Bay was used as a transit point for prisoners newly arrived by sea en route to the Magadan and Kolyma camps. Hopefully, one day these memories will be replaced by the better ones related to nature, misty sea views, and delicious fish...
