This year, nearly 20 thousand people gathered to view the reconstruction. But, judging by the number of cars, it seemed like the whole city turned out on Sapun Ridge .

Sapun Ridge was a key defense point for southeast Sevastopol. Its steep eastern slop was turned into a multi-layered defense system.

The attack was preceded by a powerful artillery attack. 250 guns located at the twelfth kilometer were concentrated on the front. Three batteries of 122-mm howitzers fired at point-blank range.

Fighting for each trench and stronghold was fierce. The Germany Armed Forces tried to counterattack several times, but they could not hold up against the onslaught of Soviet troops.

At 7:30 pm on the same day, Soviet troops broke through to Sapun Ridge's peak, opening the road to Sevastopol.

The city was liberated on May 9 and on May 12, Hitler's remaining forces surrendered the city of Kherson.
