Dogs from the main breeds were on display: Borzoi, hortaya borzaya, Persian (saluki), and tazi sighthounds. The last two breeds are among the rarest.
Saluki are thought to be one of the oldest dog breeds. The first images of them date back to 3500 B.C. Saluki are considered to be a clean animal in Islam, which is not the case for other breeds of dog. Bedouins considered saluki to be a gift from Allah and used them to hunt for rabbits and gazelles.
Tazi sighthounds are one of the oldest breeds of sighthounds best adapted to the nomadic lifestyle of peoples in Asia.
The hortaya borzaya is a hunting dog from the Southern regions of Russia’s European part as well as the steppe regions of the country’s central part. It is a hybrid of Asian and Southern Russian breeds of sighthounds with greyhounds.
