Shinzo Abe to visit Russia in May

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Russia in May, the Kyodo news agency reported on April 28. Abe’s visit to several European countries and Russia will begin on May 1, according to the report.

The Southern Kuril Island territorial dispute will figure in Abe’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the news agency said, citing Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

Media reports in February claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama had requested Abe to not visit Russia.
