According to the Dengi weekly, leading NATO members spend five times that amount, whereas in Africa spending per soldier is dramatically lower, about $1,500–3,000 a year.
However, when it comes to the cost of maintaining nuclear forces, the difference is not that marked: about $20 billion a year in the U.S. and from $10 to $15 billion, according to various estimates, in Russia.
