Kostroma Oblast is situated 492 km north-east of Moscow. Here are lots of historic towns including Kostroma, Sharya, Nerekhta, Galich, Soligalich, and Makaryev. Much of the area is covered by woods, making it one of the principal timber producing regions in Europe.
In the Chukhlomsky district of the Kostroma region, hidden between forests and abandoned villages, there is a beautiful wooden palace designed by the famous architect Ivan Ropet (1845-1908). With the establishment of Soviet power the house became public property and was used as a village school and a library.
In 2013, work began on reassembling the Terem at its original site on a brick foundation that reproduced the original. The Terem is now a tourist spot and ready to welcome visitors.
